COMMENT

MOTOR SHOWS ARE BACK AND EVs GOT REAL

THE ABILITY OF motor shows to bring multiple cars from multiple brands under one roof makes them the best place for trend spotting. In the case of this week’s Munich motor show (p6) – the first major international motor show anywhere for almost two years – one trend is impossible to ignore: the sheer volume of electric cars that will soon be here. It’s so pervasive that there’s an absence of almost anything else.

In motor shows past, even as recently as 2019, for every EV there was a performance V8, or regular SUV. Yet not in Munich: almost every new car is electric. Not just urban concepts and family crossovers but even vast offroaders, luxury saloons and racing cars. The trickle of EVs has become a flood. We’ve long heard announcements from car makers that they’ll launch no new exclusively combustion-engined models in the very near future, and nothing but EVs within a generation of those cars. Yet such statements always feel rather distant; something that is coming soon rather than tomorrow.

In Munich, tomorrow arrived. The change has been happening for a couple of years in the background, with no motor shows to chart the industry’s progress, but now that all the manufacturers’ next generation of models are once more together under one roof, the change finally seems real.
