Editor’s letter

DEAR READERS,

On a recent trip to the countryside, where there was no internet access (shock, horror!), my husband and I were talking about how reliant people have become on their mobile phones for instant answers to any question. Can’t remember an important historical date, how to make a classic sauce or who was the author of that book? We all simply turn to a search engine instead of racking our brains and memories for the answer.

So I lay down a challenge: try our annual literary quiz with no recourse to your bookshelves or any electronic aids. There are no prizes apart from perhaps pride in your score, but surely that’s enough!

Also on the literary front, Mary Novakovich explores places to visit at home and abroad linked to famous authors and novels. And, as theatres begin to reopen, Felicity Kendal talks to Richard Barber about taking to the stage in a new version of the classic musical Anything Goes.

Former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq explains her new mission to improve the environment and Thomas Blaikie examines the life of Wallis Simpson, whose relationship with the royal family of the 1930s may remind you of someone in the present day.

Ciar Byrne visits the extraordinary and controversial garden designed by Sir Roy Strong, while Roderick Conway Morris celebrates the work of John Crome, a forgotten genius of landscape painting. Meanwhile, our enforced internet-free day has inspired me to try another digital detox on a Sunday. I’ll let you know how it goes.
