COMMENT

LEAN, FOCUSED LINE UP COULD INVIGORATE JLR

THE ONLY THING that seems to have escaped the painful cuts and restructuring at Jaguar Land Rover over the past two years is the firm’s model range itself. For relatively small marques, Jaguar and Land Rover already have a large number of models, and with more additions planned. However, the restructuring of JLR, which carries renewed focus with the recent appointment of CEO Thierry Bolloré, now shines a spotlight on the cars the brands will make in the future. Everything is being looked at and nothing is off the table, from putting imminent new arrivals on ice to cancelling projects altogether (p4).

JLR has some incredible models with considerable equity, yet overlap has crept in over recent years. Is there enough differentiation between a Jaguar XE and an XF? What can a Discovery do that a Range Rover or even a Defender can’t? Future projects raise questions, too. Does Range Rover need an electric model with a bespoke body when an existing Range Rover has yet to go that way?

Bolloré brings much needed fresh eyes from outside the company, and with it a fresh approach. JLR’s design and engineering talent is considerable; world-beating, in fact. If Bolloré can steer them towards making the right cars in the right segments, he can make the company a world-beater, too.
