RANGEROVER STARSINJLR’S HYDROGENPLAN 6
COMMENT
IF HYDROGEN IS THE FUTURE,JLR WANTSIN
HYDROGEN HASBEEN on theindustry’sradar as afuel forazero-emissions future foradecade or more. Each time thediscussioncomes up,it seemstomakesomuchsense:familiar quickrefillsand bigranges, butwithno emissionsatthe tailpipe. We’vehad hydrogen cars in the UK,mostnotably theexcellent Toyota Mirai. Theonly– andit’sa bigonly– thingholding it back is the infrastructure to supportit. With the mightofToyotabehindhydrogen, you canexpectthe island nation of Japanto adoptthe technology, but elsewhere?
As an island nation ourselves, theUK couldbe fertilegroundfor hydrogen, too, although thedifficultiesinsetting upachargingnetwork forbatteryelectric cars palesintoinsignificance next toawhole newrefuellingsystem.
Even so,JaguarLandRover is ramping up operations in hydrogen research anddevelopment.Project Zeus will soonspawnarunning concept, andif– andit’sabig if–the projectprogresses well, itcould be in production by the endofthe decade in next-generation Jaguarsand Land Rovers in time for thegovernment’s 2032/35/whatever-itmakes-up-next-week banonthe sale of non-zero-emissions vehicles.Given the extracostand weight of making larger vehicles battery-electric, hydrogen must be allowed its placeatthe discussiontable forthe fuel of thefuture.
