AUSSIE RULES An acrylic on canvas by the British born Australian artist David Bromley (b. 1960) was one of the highlights of a Melbourne auctioneer’s sale to raise money for the recent bushfires. Leonard Joel’s sale raised $300,000 (£154,000) for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal with Bromley’s work selling for $24,000 (£12,400).

An auction spokesperson said: “We would like to thank everyone who attended the event or watched at home for their generosity and enthusiasm.”

The auction included donations from artists, collectors, gallerists and jewellers with no buyer’s premium meaning all proceeds went to the appeal.

Piper’s dream Works by the artist John Piper (1903-1992) are among the highlights of Mallams Auctioneers’ May 6 design and modern art sale.

In the sale his 1975 mixed media work, Bastle House, Doddington – one of his later works carries a pre-sale estimate of £3,000-£5,000. Piper’s haunting images, many of which were of churches, captured the destruction of some of the most significant ruins of WWII. His watercolours of bombed out Coventry Cathedral are now in collections at Manchester Art Gallery. The Oxford saleroom is accepting entries for the sale until April 10.
