Isobel Barber Dorset-based paper-crafter Barber created the innovative illustration on page 71 – a fine frontispiece for our guide to the 25 global history books you should read to understand today’s world. “I use layers of card and cut paper to create detailed work and miniature sets for magazines, advertising and films,” she says.
Shrabani Basu The author of Victoria & Abdul – adapted into a hit 2017 film – is one of the contributors to our list of must-read books. Her choices range from epic takes on empire to studies of key episodes in India’s history. “As Pakistan and India turned on one another, violence marked both countries, causing a wound that festers today,” she writes.
Joann Fletcher This issue’s trip to the ancient world comes in the form of our profile of Cleopatra, who Fletcher – honorary visiting professor at the University of York – a rgues hasn’t enjoyed the reputation she deserves. From page 50, the Egyptologist paints a picture of “a consummate politician, gifted scholar and inspirational leader”.
Martin Plaut A former Africa editor for BBC World Service News, Plaut writes about the complex life and legacy of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, who died in April, on page 9. “Courage and ruthless violence: these were two sides of a woman still regarded by many black South Africans as a heroine,” he argues.
Helen Rappaport Writer and historian Rappaport is among the experts sharing their view on the roots of Russia’s present-day relationship with the wider world in our Big Question feature on page 14. “Recent events have prompted talk of a renewal of the old enmities of the Cold War, but in truth they never went away,” she says.
