CHRONICLE OF THE W EEK.
AT ROME. T
THE JUBILEE
HOSE who have ever witnessed the splendour o f the illum inations with which Rom e was accustom ed, in hap
p ie r days, to celebrate the double anniversary o f the P o p e ’s deliverance at S. Agnese and his return from Gaeta, may im agine what would have been the aspect o f the city had its inhabitants been able, on th e present occasion, to manifest their joy in a public manner. But their new liberty is o f the same pattern as that which the Florentine Government boasts o f having guaranteed to the Holy Father. Of all places in the world Rome is the one where the public rejoicings would have been most sp lendid and have actually been most impossible. But the Romans have made up by acts o f private devotion for the necessary restriction on public demonstrations. The Chapters o f S. John Lateran, S. Peter’s, and Sta Maria Maggiore have been received by the Pope to present Addresses, and the Vatican Basilica will commemorate the day by th e erection, over the bronze statue o f S. Peter, of a magnificent baldachino o f marble, bronze, and mosa ic , which will b e adorned .with a medallion o f Pius IX , supported by angels and a memorial inscription. The m odel o f this monument was unveiled in s i tu after Mass on the 17 th. A tablet bearing a similar inscription will b e erected by the Chapter o f S. John Lateran in that Basilica. A Novena has been celebrated at the Gesu, and Triduums in all the Churches o f Rome, which have scarcely been able to contain the crowds o f worshippers. On the evening o f the 16 th , at seven o ’c lock, the moment a t which the election o f the P ope took p lace 2 5 years ago, there was solemn Exposition in the Cathedral Basilica o f S. Jo h n Lateran, “ the head and mother o f all the Churches of “ the world,” with prayers to the S. Heart for the Pope, and the Maestro Caponi’s motet, “ O rem us p r o P o n t íf ic e n o s tr o “ P io ," followed by the Te D e itm and Benediction. At 10 the next morning there was Pontifical High Mass at the altar o f the Chair o f S. Peter at the end o f the tribune in S. Peter’s, with the “ O rem us p r o P o n t í f ic e n o s tr o P io ," and the Te P e u m sung by the choirs and the people alternately, as none but the Roman people can sing it. The office was concluded by Benediction. The same function was celebrated at Sta Maria Maggiore. Already, some days before the anniversary, the Holy F ather had received, b esides the three great Chapters, the Sacred College, the Generals and field-officers o f the Pontifical Army, many prelates and generals o f Religious Orders, and numerous heads o f foreign deputations. On the 14 th , the ladies o f the “ Rom an Society for Catholic Interests ” assem bled in the Basilica o f Sta Croce in Gerusalemme to venerate the relics o f the Passion, and proceeded on foot in small groups, re-

citing the Rosary, to S. John Lateran, to hear Mass and communicate for the Pope. On the 17 th , 18 th , and igth, all the foreign Colleges celebrated a jo in t Triduo, at which the students o f the German College sung. Not only the deputations, but an immense crowd o f pilgrims from all countries and o f all classes, have been entering Rome. More than 600 apartm ents had been taken for those from Germany alone. Belgium, we need not say, was conspicuous in the expression o f her devotion to the Holy See. The D iocese o f Mechlin alone sent an offering o f 1 1 6 ,0 0 0 francs. The Dutch deputation brought the sum o f 1 7 5 ,0 0 0 florins, and the Spanish deputation over 4 00 ,0 00 francs. Letters o f congratulation have been received from all the Sovereigns through their several representatives, and from M. Thiers through the Comte d ’H arcourt. K in g Victor Emmanuel sent General Bertole-V iale, but the Pope, courteously acknowledging the message, declined to receive the bearer.

LAITY.
The 29 Committees of the “ Rom an Society “ for Catholic Interests” were received by the Pope on the 15 th . The Deputation consisted o f nearly 1 5 0 0 persons, headed by the Prince o f Campagnano, eldest son o f Prince Cliigi. In replying to their address, his Holiness energetically condemned the irreligious press, “ so faithful in every kind o f calumny,” and instanced S. Francis o f Sales as an example o f how Catholics should behave under it. “ L e t us remain pure,” he said, “ and after “ these storms we shall appear brilliant and luminous as the “ R o ck on which the Church is founded. For some days “ the waves may cover it, but when they ebb, they leave it “ cleaner, more polished, and more brightly reflecting the “ light o f heaven.” This audience was followed by that o f the Roman ladies, 800 in number. In the midst o f the Pope’s paternal and affectionate address to them, two telegrams arrived, which he opened. When he had read the first, he said:— “ It is from the Queen o f England, my child“ ren ; she jo in s you in congratulating me on my 25th an“ niversary.” H er Majesty’s telegram could not have arrived more opportunely, and the ladies responded with the cry, “ V iva la R e g in a d ' I n g h i l t e r r a / ” The other telegram was from Malta. The inhabitants o f the island asked leave to observe the day as a feast o f obligation.
Everything seems to point to a not very dis-
REVOLUTION ATROME.
THB tant outbreak at Rome, and perhaps in other parts of Italy. It is not from the Romans themselves that the blow will come, but the city appears to get fuller and fuller o f those “ gallows-faces” who are the sure precursors o f a storm. The Grandmastership o f the Freem asons has ju st been established there, and the Grand Lodge has erected a monument to Tognetti at San Lorenzo. The “ Haute Vente” o f the Revolution is said to have been deliberating on the expediency o f immediate. action. I t is certain that the three questions, o f the
