NEWS AND NOTES A T Cowes, with her royal owner himself a t the wheel, the racing-cutter Britannia has won her two hundredth trium ph. Thus His Majesty’s recovery of health, for which we all so earnestly prayed, has been manifested beyond a doubt. A further proof of the confidence which his advisers have in our beloved King’s regained strength is the decision th a t the Heir Apparent shall pay visits next year to Argentina and Brazil. Like the King of Spain, the Prince of Wales is not ashamed to be what he gaily calls a commercial traveller for the Empire ; and we do not doubt th a t his journey will substantially help B rita in ’s export trade. But there is more than money in our hopes. The Prince will see w ith his own eyes two great States—one of Spanish and the other of Portuguese parentage— which are as Catholic as they are progressive.

There is more of sunshine than of cloud in the sky which looks down at this moment upon the Catholic Church. Such depressions and storms as have lately troubled us in England have been only local. All the time, the life and work of the Church go on. Last Sunday, those who were in Rome despite the August heats had the joy of knowing th a t the first native Ethiopian Catholic Bishop had th a t day been consecrated in the E ternal City. The very virulence of certain anti-Catholics proves th a t the Church is more th an holding her own in her ancient seats ; and, at the same time, fair new’ domains are being brought under her gentle sway. The darkest clouds hang over Russia and China ; but we all know th a t our Holy Father gives to these two vast lands foremost places in his cares and in his prayers, and therefore we may hope th a t even over Russia and China the sun will soon shine again.

English Catholics, led by the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster himself, will swell the crowds which are gathering in Budapest to keep the nine hundredth anniversary of young St. Im re’s death. Not only for the sake of th a t Catholic solidarity which is the first consideration a t such rejoicings but on Hungary’s temporal account also, we are glad th a t fellow-countrymen of ours are just now visiting th a t Christian kingdom which is without its Apostolic King.

While standing outside politics ourselves, we may a t least express the hope th a t our pilgrims will add to their pious exercises and sight-seeing a little firsthand observation of Hungary’s enormous difficulties. The dynastic question may have to remain unsolved some tim e longer, because the Governments of the “ Little Entente ” Powers, which encircle Hungary,
