NEWS AND NOTES A S the grievous news came to London only on the afternoon o f The Tablet’s press-day last week, we could insert no more than a few lines about Queen Astrid’s death. Many peoples beside his faithful Belgians have mourned with King Leopold, who knows that he is upheld by great buttresses o f prayer.
Northern Ireland is his place o f residence, the Irish Primate leads, in a Catholic sense, a United Ireland which knows no frontiers save those cut deeply by bigots along the map-makers’ light lines. The Tablet, not long ago, published words o f His Eminence about the interwoven destinies o f the two Islands which are among our most cherished memories. Long may the successor of St. Patrick live and reign !
Obeying our own precept of “ Silence in Court,” we renounce the critic’s and especially the censor’s office in respect o f this week’s doings at Geneva and are content to be little more than reporters. As Lake Leman is only a dozen leagues or so from the Lac du Bourget, where Mr. Baldwin is making a cure, Mr. Eden was able to confer with his chief up to the eve o f the Council meeting. He presented the British Government’s view at the Geneva table clearly and fairly ; o f course avoiding that question o f sanctions which cannot properly be raised until the circumstances have changed for the worse. M. Laval identified France with Britain as a loyal member-State of the League. On behalf o f Italy, Baron Aloisi presented a long and stern indictment of Abyssinia which frightened those hearers who do not understand that certain Latins habitually “ begin high,” so as to have plenty o f room for a dignified descent. The B.B.C. “ observer” at Geneva, for instance, was so deeply depressed by Wednesday’s proceedings that he communicated his pessimism to millions of listeners-in and cast a gloom over countless British supper-tables. While not minimising the dangers of the situation in which Peace is just now precariously balanced, we ourselves do not abandon hope that, if rough elbows can be kept away from it, the dispute may still be settled without War.
To Cardinal MacRory, who is to be England's guest next week, we offer respectful congratulations on the golden jubilee o f his priesthood. Although I
During the week, sundry pacifists who are suddenly become sabre-rattlers have importuned us on behalf o f a bellicose policy. They are hereby informed that we deplore their procedure and cannot
