NEWS AND NOTES ■ ■¡I' ------ 1
S CANT thanks to Heaven were given by the speakers and writers who rejoiced at the dawn o f a New Year rosy with the promise of peace. Nearly all the gratitude was bestowed upon mortal men. President A., Mr. B., Herr C., Signor D., Monsieur E., the Baron F., had proved themselves fine and clever fellows. As Catholics who believe in both work and prayer, we do not undervalue the skill and perseverance lavished for mankind’s benefit by able and public-spirited men whose devotion we admire. But how would these peace-makers have fared if they had not breathed

and laboured in an atmosphere quick with a general will-to-peace ? It is for that tonic atmosphere that we humbly say Deo gratias. Only Heaven knows how many prayers went to make it. To some at least of those prayers our own weekly ^News and Notes ” have contributed their urge. “ You are so quaint,” said a good-natured worldling to us one day. “ In the midst of cool arguments about politics, you suddenly tell us to pray.” We beg men and women to pray, because prayers are answered; and we have not a shadow of doubt that the earnest prayers of 1934 were the chief cause of that pax in terra which was almost universal on the birthday of the Prince of Peace.
Among the most noteworthy of Catholic prayers last year were the earnest pleadings for Peace made by veterans of the Great War at Lourdes, that famous shrine o f Regina Pacis. Not only old comrades who had fought shoulder to shoulder, but men who had faced the muzzles of one. another’s rifles as deadly enemies joined in those memorable days of intercession. And now our Holy Father, knowing that the precarious peace to-day existing in the world is threatened with overthrow by the excesses of Nationalism and Racialism, again points to Lourdes as the place where the shaky understandings and deals of the diplomatists can be underpinned and rockily stablished on a sound and sure foundation of true Christian brotherhood. In ah Apostolic Letter (henceforth to be cited a‘s Quod tarn alacri) to Mgr. Gerlier, Bishop of Tarbes and Lourdes, the Sovereign Pontiff directs that a Triduum of most exceptional solemnity shall be celebrated at the Grotto by the Gave on April 26, 27 and 28. Culminating on Low Sunday, which will thus become a High Sunday indeed, the Holy Sacrifice will be offered without cease, day and night. Meanwhile, the Bishops o f all Catholic Christendom will provide each a Triduum suitable to his own flock. Thus will the extended Holy Year in honour of the nineteenth centenary of our Redemption be closed eucharistically and in a strenuousness of prayer for love and peace.
