NEWS AND NOTES AUSTRO-GERMAN tension has given out sounds so shrill that the essential message of this week’s celebrations in Vienna has wholly failed to reach the ears of millions who need it. The twohundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of the Turkish defeat outside Vienna on September 12, 1683, is full of lessons for the Christendom o f to-day. In the seventeenth century, the false religion o f the Crescent moved westward to overthrow the Cross ; and in the twentieth the Cross is threatened by desperate men who believe in no religion at all. In 1683, it was the

Catholic Faith which inspired the West’s enthusiastic and triumphant resistance ; and in 1933 it is again the Vicar of Christ whose voice is heard against the Eastern Menace. When John Sobieski, Catholic King of Poland, resolved to deliver besieged Vienna from the infidel he set out on the Feast o f Our Lady’s Assumption ; and his last act before leaving Poland was to send a letter to Pope Innocent X I , in which he said “ I mount my charger to join in a Holy War and, with God’s help, to give back to Vienna her ancient liberty.” The brave King added : “ Right well do I trust, with your apostolic blessings and fatherly love upholding me, that Your Holiness will not abandon me when the moment comes to plunge into the fray for the glory o f the Cross and for the preservation of the Christian world.” When the battle was joined, the Grand Vizier’s Turks, 180,000 strong, heavily outnumbered the Christians, but the issue of that memorable day was a smashing defeat o f the Ottoman power. King John, after nearly eight hours of hard fighting, routed the enemy, who fled, leaving all their artillery, horses, stores and camp equipment behind. Heaven grant that Christendom in the very near future may hurl back the AntiGod drive without war and bloodshed ; but even in fighting with the pen and with the voice we must rely, as did John Sobieski and his men, upon the Lord God of Hosts. Such is Vienna’s lesson for us this w e e k ; and, in comparison with it, the Nazi success in depriving the Congress o f its pan-German character is a trivial thing.

Figures are before us now which were lacking last week, when we made mention o f the election o f 15 Spaniards to serve on the new Court o f Constitutional Guarantees. As the electors in this case were the Municipal Councillors o f Spain, and as the Government had taken care last April to hold only partial Municipal Elections, not more than about 50,000 votes could be cast on this occasion. The Government candidates are said to have secured 12,910 v o t e s ; but this is too high an estimate because it includes votes given to three
