N E W S A N D NOTES TRENDING receipt o f exact information we -*■ write only a provisory Note on the birth of a Bulgarian Princess. Published telegrams assert that the infant was hastily and secretly baptized according to the Orthodox rite, although King Boris and Queen Giovanna (a princess of Italy ’s royal family) had solemnly promised that any offspring o f their union should be brought up in the Catholic Church. As to the alleged haste and secrecy in Sofia, The Tablet knows no more than the secular jou rnals; but we can speak positively on the antecedents of this affair. When the Sovereign Pontiff, more than two years ago, granted a dispensation for Princess Giovanna to marry a non-Catholic husband, the betrothed couple entered into the necessary engagements.

That they should have treated those engagements as mere scraps o f paper is a lamentable sequel. But we cannot for the life o f us understand the gloating tone in which some English publicists are describing this affair as a defeat for the Papacy and a humiliation for the Pope. In the eyes of honourable men, the salient fact is that two exalted personages, whose regality lays upon them a more than ordinary obligation of punctilious honour, appear to have behaved with cynical levity towards their formal pledges. In the ordinary relations of life we do not applaud promise-breakers; nor do we regard their dupes as butts for ridicule. The excuse of King Boris is that his Ministers decided upon the baptism of the new-born Princess Marie Louise according to the Orthodox rite and that he has merely acceded to the wishes of his people ; but he knew as much about his Ministers and his people in October, 1930, as he knows in January, 1933.

On the re-assembling of Parliament next month, a praiseworthy effort will be made from the backbenches to raise the question of the British Broadcasting Corporation’s proposed and announced broadcast on Communism. Private Members who support us in this matter ought to get into touch with one another without delay. Otherwise the questioner may be put off with a bureaucratic answer which will be no real answer at all.

German opinion differs concerning last Sunday’s Election in the State of Lippe. As the Nazis have regained in January the votes which they had lost to the Nationalists last November, it suits Herr Hitler to describe Lippe as a “ miniature battlefield ” whereon he has won a victory which would be reproduced throughout the whole Reich if another General Election were held to-morrow. This is a point on which even a journalist living in London may express reasonable doubt. The Miniature Battlefield is too miniature. Into our English county of Kent, the whole State o f Lippe could
