NEWS AND NOTES A NOTHER Septuagésima Sunday lies just behind ■ us and Lent is very near. Therefore we repeat our oft-given advice to layfolk. Let all who do not possess such things already, hie them to the bookseller’s and acquire copies o f the books which will enable them to spend what we have repeatedly called a Lent with the Liturgy. Readers who have long ago begun to follow this counsel o f ours must bear with our reiteration. It is made for the sake of

recent converts and others who were not studying The Tablet when we first explained the immense spiritual advantages accruing from a daily use of the Lenten Mass-Propers, either in church or at home. We have not yet heard of a single acceptor of our advice who does not agree with us that a complete Missal (in Latin and English for those whose Latin is not fluent) is the best of all prayer-books.

Grousers are to be found in all places and at all times. Although nobody who has made the experiment sends us other than thankful letters on our plan of “ Lent with the Liturgy,” several critics have told us that they “ don’t want sermons in News and Notes ” and that the brief meditations on selected ferial Propers of Lent which have appeared on our front page have been misplaced. But as soon as we failed to keep up this Lenten practice of The Tablet’s we received strong demands for restitution. From all over the world letters have come assuring us that our meditations upon and applications of the Propers have been found helpful b y preachers, as well as by individual Christians in their private devotional exercises. For example, that energetic and earnest Marist Fr. Hurley o f Sydney, N.S.W., has just written to s a y :

Our Missionaries make a special point in their preaching of urging the faithful to enter into the daily spiritual life of the Church and they encourage the work that is dear to your heart—the use of the Missal at Mass. In connection with this I may tell you that your usual references to the Liturgy during Lent are used by our Missionaries to the fullest. Still more encouraging to us are some quite private letters from religious houses urging us to go on with our Lenten paragraphs. Therefore we shall humbly try to produce a fresh series which can be skipped by anybody who objects to pious reading as a start for weekly News and Notes which necessarily include political and controversial items.

Both in its historical origin and its liturgical contents the Sexagésima Mass-Proper is useful to us just now. Like the Propers of Septuagésima
