The first time I saw a shoebill was in a zoo in Switzerland where I was on holiday with my parents. As it was grey and standing completely still I thought it was a form of surreal statue; a sort of Alice in Wonderland fantasy creature from the famous croquet game. Although I knew the mallets in the book were flamingoes, this bird looked so apt for knocking balls through hoops. It was only when it blinked I saw it was alive. All these years later my fascination with such a specialist bird has been revived by Sue Watt’s account of the species on page 60, and its amazing local guardians.
Gerald Durrell, the central figure in the popular TV series The Durrells and author of My Family and Other Animals, another of my favourite childhood books, is the subject written about by Patrick Barkham on page 68. He gives real insight into the great conservationist’s history and influence.
I hope you enjoy this month’s reads!
