KACIMI

Mohammed Kacimi i s a painter, poet and creator of events. Born in Meknès, Morocco, in 1942, he now l ives and works in Rabat and Paris. He works on immense surfaces, with a resolutely contemporary approach: i n 1988 seven haiks streamed over the centre of Marrakesh; in 1990 he set up ‘The Cave of Future

Times’ in the Rabat French Institute; in 1994, as part of a UNESCO project, he realised ‘The Slave Trail’, a public painting in Ouidah, Benin, where 200 years earlier men and women had been shipped away as slaves. Kacimi holds a one-man show almost every year. He has participated i n many group exhibitions in France and Morocco and won prizes at the Cairo Biennale (1993 – prize of honour, 1995 – 1st prize) and the St Quentin Pastel Biennale (1994 – 1st prize). His publications include The White Summer, a collection of poems and paintings, and The Ochre Winds, a collection made in collaboration with the poet Hassan Najmi.
