Welcome to the inaugural Songlines International World Music Festivals Guide 2016-17. There’s been a huge boom of world music, folk and roots festivals over the last few years and it's become a truly global phenomenon. Within this guide, we include details of over 120 international festivals – from Cajun celebrations in the Deep South of the US and Nordic festivities in Scandinavia to Creole fiestas in the Indian Ocean. We’ve aimed to be as inclusive as possible and have listed the festivals chronologically – some dates for 2017 are yet to be confirmed. We’ve also colour-coded the festivals to make this guide as userfriendly as possible. Festivals can mean big business, but they can also have important social functions too, as Simon Broughton highlights on p8. We also pinpoint the rise in music industry events that combine festival programmes together with a professional music market on p28.
