BARRY COMMONER is Professor of Plant Physiology and Director of the Center for the Biology of Natural Systems at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Scientists' Institute for Public Information. He is a founder and past president of the Committee for Environmental Information, in whose journal, Scientist and Citizen the article we reproduce by permission here was first published. It is based on an address to the Graduate School, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, D.C. given on Dec. 13, 1967. Barry Commoner's book, Science and Survival, (Gollancz) (1963) was reviewed in Resurgence, Vol. 1, No. 11 (Jan/Feb. 1968).
