JAMES LE FANU , whose last book, Healthline: An Intelligent Guide for the Over-Sixties was pub l ished by Macmillan in 1992, is currently considering two books: one, on the rise and fall of modern medicine, will describe how it has gone wrong; the other will be about God and the mysteries of human biology. Meanwhile, he has regular medical columns in the Daily and Sunday Telegraph, is freq uently to be seen in The Times, and works as a physician in general practice in London.

ROY H ATTERSLEY, who was Deputy Leader of the Labour Party for many years and achieved the rank of Secretary of State (for Prices and Consumer Protection) in the last Labour government of James Callaghan (1976-1979), now devotes himse lf to the world of letters, writing books on politics, novels and sage comments on current affairs in the better class of newspaper.
