. EDITORIAL

We are delighted to welcome as editor of The Literary Review, Emma Soames, who will be responsible for the magazine from the November issue.

The Literary Review was founded by Anne Smith in October 1979 to f i l l a gap left by the absence of The Times Literary Supp/iupentduring the prolonged Times strike of th.at year. So successfuliy was ·that gap f i l led that the magazine has continued to f lourish despite the return of the TLS, establishing an identity of its own and a high standard of editorial content.

l t has been edited for the past three years by Gillian Greenwood, gaining in circulation and reputation and c~lebrates its f i f th anniversary next month. She leaves on 10 September to work on a television arts programme.
