Disc of the Month Raff Orchestral Works, Vol. 1 This is the first release in a new series of orchestral works by the nineteenth-century Swiss-German composer Joachim Raff, one of the most widely performed and influential musicians of his time. The series kicks off with Symphony No. 2 and the preludes to four plays by Shakespeare – The Tempest, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Othello – performed by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and conducted by its new Artistic and Music Director, Neeme Järvi.

Schumann Works for Piano, Vol. 1 Chandos is delighted to welcome Imogen Cooper to the label. Here she performs works for solo piano by Robert Schumann. Fantasiestücke and Kreisleriana are central to the repertoire, and here complemented with the solo piano arrangement which Johannes Brahms made of the Theme and Variations movement from his String Sextet No. 1, and dedicated to Clara Schumann. Turina Danzas fantásticas This disc forms part of our ongoing Spanish Music series, performed by the BBC Philharmonic and its Chief Conductor, Juanjo Mena. Here the focus is on Joaquín Turina, one of the leading Spanish composers of the twentieth century, whose music displays the contrasting influences of traditional Andalusian folk tunes and French impressionism. Chausson Works for String Quartet The Doric String Quartet turns to chamber works by Ernest Chausson. The String Quartet, Op. 35 was left unfinished on the composer’s death, and the version recorded here was completed by Vincent d’Indy. In the Concert for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet, Op. 21, the four musicians are joined by the acclaimed violinist Jennifer Pike and pianist Tom Poster. CHAN 10754

Berlioz Overtures The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Sir Andrew Davis perform overtures by Hector Berlioz, a composer who excelled in blending literary and musical elements into highly energetic and personal creations. Wesley Sacred Choral Works The Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge has recorded some of the best-known choral works of Samuel Sebastian Wesley, interspersing them with one of his organ works as well as a psalm chant by his father, Samuel Wesley.
