Editor’s Note
What a year it has been. 2007 has been significant in so many ways. This issue of Aesthetica marks a celebration. It’s our 20th issue and I am delighted. Starting this magazine was one of the best things that I have ever done in my life (not to mention one of the most challenging). It has been a wonderful journey, which has sculpted me into the person I am today. 2007 has been a great year for the arts in the UK with so many exciting exhibitions: from Dazed & Confused vs. Andy Warhol at the BALTIC, Alien Nation at the ICA, the Glasgow Art Fair, to the Brighton Festival and the inaugural Manchester International Festival, as well as the Turner Prize at the TATE Liverpool. With the coming of 2008, I can hear myself muttering, “geeze, I can’t believe that the first decade of the 21st century is almost over.” It’s strange because I refer back to 2000 and remember the humour of Y2K, and it does actually seem like a long time ago. Alas, it must be said: I am not a dweller and I always look forward to the future. With new years come the resolutions. Eat healthier, be nice, do something new everyday, enjoy life, stop smoking, stop being overly critical, lose weight, help the needy, etc. Maybe 2008 will be the year to stick to it? This issue of Aesthetica brings together some great features. From Jack Mapanje and Carol Birch in literature, photographer Diana Scheunemann and urban artist Adam Neate, Nick Broomfield on his new film Battle For Haditha, to Gravenhurst and arts on television. There’s a lot inside. I hope that you enjoy reading.
