SPOTLIGHT

Colbran, the Muse

• Joyce DiDonato For her second Virgin Classics recital, Joyce DiDonato turns to Gioacchino Rossini, the composer whose heroines Rosina and Cenerentola first brought her to international stardom. In particular, DiDonato celebrates the roles Rossini created for his wife and muse Isabella Colbran, the reigning diva of her day, with performances of arias from Il barbiere di Siviglia, La donna deZZago, Otello, Semiramide, Armida, Maometto II and Elisabetta regina d'Inghilterra. This album follows Joyce'sheroic performance as Rosina in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Royal Opera House in July 2009 where she wowed London audiences by proving the show must go on despite a broken leg.
