welcome What do you think makes an artist or producer distinctive in this vast ocean of music? Is it down to the their mastery of melody, chordal choices or mixing techniques? Or, in fact, is it something far more subtle? Could it be that how their music actually sounds – something that affects and courses through every element of their tracks – is that crucial component? This issue we’re gently wading into the ultra-deep domain of sound design, beginning with some basic starting points before venturing into ways of making your projects sound out of this world, and massively unique. So throw away those templates, put away those presets and start expanding your creative mindset. We start on page 18.
Also this issue, we speak to an artist who is on a quest to yield new sounds from a modest toolkit. The Swedish artist Moonilena explains how she melds both software with hardware to concoct alluring new aural universes. We also catch up with up-and-coming engineer and producer Jess Camilleri, who explains her journey into the professional stage, and working with the likes of MIA, Kaiser Chiefs and Rudimental.
We’ve got another quite amazing free gift this issue in the shape of IK Multimedia’s Tape Machine 80: a super realistic tape machine emulator with an SRP of £84. But, yes you read that right, it’s free for all readers this issue. Head to p12 to learn how to download it and how to get the best out of it.
Next issue we’re finally serving up our all-new CM Plugin Suite: freshly audited and overhauled for 2024. There might be one or two (or more) new items added to the mix too… Come back next month and all will be revealed!
