IT’S FITTING THAT Mazda should reveal the Iconic SP concept, a tantalising glimpse at the next-generation MX-5, in the week we bring you the 35th running of our annual Britain’s Best Driver’s Car contest. The MX-5 is a BBDC double winner (1990 and 2003) and across its generations has regularly outshone more expensive and powerful cars on road and track. When we assembled our five favourite BBDC winners in 2019, the MX-5 was rightfully among them. Yet Mazda wasn’t the only firm at the Tokyo motor show that seemed to be making a case for inclusion in a future BBDC field: just look at the Toyota FT-Se (previewing a future MR2), the 1341bhp Nissan Hyper Force (the next GT-R) and the rallyinspired Subaru Sport Mobility.
At a time when many Japanese car firms are battling to prove they’re not behind in the transition to EVs, it’s notable how they’ve turned to performance cars to showcase their future intentions. The biggest challenge, of course, will be delivering future production machines that can truly live up to the stellar reputations of their predecessors. Let’s hope they succeed: an MX-5 will always be welcome at our Britain’s Best Driver’s Car contest.
