COMMENT

GIGAFACTORIES DON’T JUST BUILD BATTERIES

YOU’LL FIND interesting statistics throughout every issue of Autocar, whether it’s staggering power outputs or eyebrowraising prices. But the stat that’s caught my eye this week concerns doughnuts. When Somerset firm Dough Bros makes its monthly trip to the Hink ley Point nuclear plant construction site, it can sell 1000 fried treats at a time. The automotive link? Well, as John Evans found out when he visited Bridgwater (p44), the Dough Bros are eyeing the forthcoming construction of JLR owner Tata’s new battery factory in the town as another chance to make some serious, erm, dough. During the global race to secure EV and battery production, plenty of statistics get thrown around about job creation and value to the economy. But those statistics don’t tell you what such facilities really mean to a community.

John’s feature is a welcome reminder that attracting new automotive manufacturing facilities can bring real benefits to entire communities. True, not everyone in Bridgwater seems quite so excited about the battery plant, but it’s clear that it could provide a major boost to the local economy. That’s why it’s so vital the government continues to invest in and help the motor industry in the EV transition.
