LAMBORGHINI HAS GONE ELECTRIC – BUT IT’S NOT CHANGING ITS PERSONALITY 6

COMMENT

GET STREETWISE ABOUT CHARGERS, COUNCILS

A BIT OF paper stuck haphazardly to a lamp-post doesn’t sound exciting – but when you regularly drive EVs and don’t have a home charger, discovering that your local council is considering installing an EV charger a few hundred metres from your front door, as I have, is genuinely thrilling. Not everyone is so fortunate, as data revealed by a Freedom of Information request by Vauxhall illustrates (p18). Nearly two-thirds of councils have no kerbside chargers – and almost half currently have no plans to install any. Clearly, many council budgets are under strain, but with 2030 fast approaching, that’s hugely frustrating. While motorway fast chargers grab the headlines, it’s on-street chargers that can really make going electric viable for many. Plus, lamp-post chargers are not that costly to install and the firms running them have the investment in place and are eager to get going. The government has made some grants available, but nobody seems to be educating local councils on EV charging. So credit to Vauxhall for its initiative – worth around £1 million in the first year – to help educate drivers, guide councils and speed up the installation of on-street chargers. For EVs to truly take off, we need to ensure they can be run by anyone any where.
