COMMENT

BETTER TO BE BRIGHTON THAN TO BE CHELSEA

IT’S THE START of the football season, when clubs announce big-name player signings to lead them to glory. Give it a few months and some of those same clubs will be mired in mid-table mediocrity and some of their signings will begin to look very questionable.

It isn’t just football clubs that love big-name transfers: when car makers look for a new leader, they’re often drawn to a high-profile outside hire. Sometimes, though, they shouldn’t ignore the talent they have within. When Jaguar Land Rover had to replace long-time boss Ralf Speth in 2020, it went for former Renault boss Thierr y Bolloré. The Frenchman laid the groundwork for its Reimagine plan, but he left within only two years. So instead of chasing another industry giant to replace him, JLR plumped for an unheralded bean-counter and company lifer in Adrian Mardell.

It didn’t grab headlines, but sometimes safe is good. As we found out this week (p36), Mardell has real passion for JLR and commitment to reviving its fortunes – and he isn’t afraid to make tough decisions.

It’s too early to say if JLR can charge up the automotive league table. But it already seems clear that, while Mardell may not have been a star signing from overseas, he’s the right man for the job.
