illustration matters.
I have been invited to speak at the Illustrative 07 conference in Berlin this fall and in preparing my talk I looked back on conversations I’ve had with illustrators on both sides of the pond.Speak with illustrators in America and what you mostly hear are complaints.Complaints about oppressive editors and ball-less art directors; don’t get them started about fees-be prepared for a deluge of obscenities. And you inevitably hear about the ‘good old days’ when illustrators were rock stars. Mention to them you’ve just had lunch with someone from across the pond and their eyes light up with envy. “Now those guys have it easy! Everyone over there ‘gets it’; they understand art and artists and the value of illustration.” They’ll point out how much illustration you see over there in everyday places; the balance of photography and illustration usage and how smart editors and art directors can be. They’ll say they must either have brighter editors or ballsy art directors,or both. “Gee those guys are so lucky. Maybe it’s time to start looking for a rep over there.” Trouble is, just switch that word ‘America’ in the sentence to any other country and you’ll hear the same grumbling. And the same awe. Everyone over there feels America is where it’s at illustration-wise, the rock stars of illustration live and work in the US-and the feeling is they always have. “Boy if I could only get an American rep and cash-in on some of those plum assignments,” they’ll say. Problem is it’s really no better or worse on either side of the pond. Sure, standing here, we can point to what’s happening over there as an example of what we think is the good use of illustration however the education of art directors and editors has to happen everywhere. To start we must make them think it’s better over there and maybe, just maybe they’ll start acting like they do over there, here.
As you may have noticed our cover is a departure for us but the purpose is to celebrate our ninth issue-a milestone of sorts, after all 3x3 does equal 9. In total twenty-seven illustrators have been featured, over 150 artists have shown their work inside the magazine in our Gallery and Showcase and thanks to their support and the support of our small core of advertisers we have made it to double-digits. Also thanks to our distributors who have pushed and pulled to get 3x3 on the shelves across the globe. And of course a special thanks for those of you who subscribe and continue to support our efforts. We’ve learned how to crawl and now we can walk but we’re still a babe in the woods when you look at all the other graphic arts publications. We’ve made it this far by a lot of sweat and a fair amount of luck; it’s amazing to me that a design studio can design, publish and distribute a magazine-people often mistake us for a publishing company with a design studio when just the opposite is true. What’s next on the horizon? Well you’re getting a taste of some of it in this issue, four more pages which will graduate to eight starting with the next issue. And we’ll do some design tweaks that may or may not be noticeable. What won’t change is our persistent coverage of the world of contemporary illustration. Or the quality of our publication. Now we’re looking forward to our next milestone, 2012, when we turn nine years old. Three cheers to you our reader.
