the magazine of contemporary illustration
vol.two no.one
good things come in threes.
With this issue we start our second year in publishing. As we continue to grow, you’ll notice a few changes—most of these have occurred because of what we learned from the results of our Reader Survey. All in all,the comments were most favorable, though you were quick to point out where we made mistakes…like setting birdseed type in gray against a black back-ground.You won’t find that in this or any future issues. You really liked the artists we’ve been featuring, the studio views and the overall look of the magazine.Plus, you recommended some very interesting artists for us to look at for the future. What we also heard was that you wanted more meat and longer articles—surprise, surprise! You like to read! So starting with this issue you’ll now see more in-depth articles and two brand new columns. The first new column is called Twenty Questions. We ask every featured artist the same 20 questions, but you’ll discover they each come back with very unique answers. The other new column will feature advertising campaigns that are currently using illustration. We talk with the art buyer, creative director and creative team about why they chose art over photography and about the working process. This is part of our ongoing effort to spotlight interesting campaigns so that advertising agency art directors start thinking illustration. As another part of growing up,this issue features the addition of paid advertisers—we welcome aboard both the Illustration Academy and the Central Illustration Agency (CIA). We’ll be approaching other potential advertisers in the future, but will always limit the number to a handful of very select companies.Since we print overseas and the dollar is not currently faring well against the euro, advertisers help us offset our rising costs.Moving into more paid advertising will allow us to keep our subscription prices stable. But we will not cut corners on quality, ever.Growing up is sometimes awkward, often scary, but always enlightening. If you are a parent, you remember well just how quickly our children grow up.The long sleepless nights, the trips to the doctor, the endless, costly wardrobe changes all become a blur—before you know it they’re walking out the door on their first date, and later out the door for good. It’s no different giving birth to a magazine—or a career for that matter—we all stumble, fail, fall down, get up and keep moving forward. Children and magazines and careers all start with baby steps. You have sent us gentle reassurances that our baby steps really matter, that you can forgive our stumbles, our mistakes and that you are proud of what
we’ve accomplished so far. I thank you.
