MANUFACTURERS_ TAKE NOTE!
WE always knew that some girls were interested in some aspects of car design as well as in driving. We also suspected that these interests had been growing significantly. What we did not realize was that so many oi our women readers would be willing to sit down and write at such length and in such detail to us. We are truly grateful and most impressed with the down-to_earth, thoughtful and often amusing comments they have made.
On page 6 we explain that we shall now be giving a lot of space in two. probably three issues of Autocil to the women's points of view. We shall also offer in'these issues six entertaining and instructive articles by women in motoring, starting with Judith Jackson (the title of whose article we have borrowed for this page) and Bette Hill (Life with a World Champion).
Certain firm convictions and practically unanimous opinions are emerging from the letters we are receiving. We shall attempt to analyse them and report a little later on. Women mostly say that they do not think they would make good car designers, but would like to have more say in car design. Motor manufacturers will be very unwise if they shrug off the advice which we shall now be handing on to them from women motorists.
Already it is crystal clear that women drive;s rate very highly the "parkability" of cars, and are very largely dissatisfied with their own on that score. Few regard as satisfactory the positions of pedals in relation to steering wheel and seat adjustment, and practically all find shelf, pocket and /or locker space very inadequate.
It has often been suggested that women do not care about performance. yet high on the list of desirable features they have placed brisk acceleration. On the other hand, very few of them seem to b€ interested in very high speed.
Maybe we shall be able to compile a list of "musts,, for the woman's ideal car. Maybe we shall find that many men also approve of all or most of the suggestions.
