Give Your Brakes A Break

A LMOST evervone could have 5-10 miles more per A galon from" their cars if they really wanted it r r and be better drivers while obtaining it; that is what we deduce from the article starting overleaf. Although the Mobil Economy Run, with which the story is conclrned, has publicity as its basis, it is one of the most valuable and generally interesting events. Once again are suessed the essentials of having the car in fiist-class mechanical adiustrnent and condition, and of the driver having well-developed powers of anticipation. Good oil and peuol help too, of course!

By coincidence we have been concerned at the same time with the un-economy caused by brakes and braking. Ve had rwo personal experiences of performance falling off and fuel consumption increasing with small cars. The fault was nothing more or less than parking brakes that did not free fully on releasing the lever, or did so only occasionally. Yet there was no obvious symptom, particularly on the car with inconsistent freeing; no rubbing sor:nds were heard. The cars were jacked up, the brakes adjusted and made to free; then performance and economy were back to normal.

Then, last week, we had the front brakes fail on a car with a divided system. It was not sudden or dangerous, just a fadeout over l0 miles of a iourney, Two points emerged, the first that the remaining rear brake system and the hand brake were not in a condition to do any real stopping, the second that if a driver ries hard not to use the brakes (in this case to $pare them until a good garage could be found) he may find that he needs them less than he thought.

The driver concerned in this case, who has many years' experience, was well aware that the roads abound with " Nervous Brake Dabbers " and believed himself to be above reproach in this respect. Vhen the fluid weep had been stopped and the hydraulic reservoir topped up he drove on at speed again but almost every time he felt his foot reach for the brake on the approach of a bend or a corner he held it off. He soon found to his horror that only in about l0 per cent of cases was braklrg necessary. Unknowingly he had slipped into a "check-brake, accelerate out" routine when taking bends and corners which was simply wasting fuel, time, brake pads and tyres. Do you brake unnecessarily?

Rationed Rallying

IN A most readable Minisry of Transport report, published last week, are outlined the recommendations of the Motor Rallies Advisory Committee. They are covered in some detail on page 902 of this issue. Thc subject arises because nearly 8,000 official and unofficial er"ott are now being held on British roads each year and, not unnaturallyr-people who are not interested in them have complaiii:d. The inconvenience caused to the inhabitants- of popular rallying areas, often with several events running through the same terrain each weekend, by night as well as, c,an be imagined"

This nhe country could not afford; Britain's successes in international rallies and the tremendous boost they give to our motor industry,ar-e-owed largely to the triiring and experience provided by the many R.A.C.-controlled evenis organized on the roads and tracks of this country. Already this year Hopkirk and Lyddon have scored outright victory in the Monte Garlo Rally and the Morley brothers won the G'T. category in the Tulip---all four brought up in the lesser British rallies.

Throughout their recommendations the committee have shown an intimate knowledge and understanding of the problems involved, both in competing in and in organizing rallies. Ve feel that they have achieved aa exiellent compromise to provide for the continuation of British rallying and to look after the interests of the public.
