Notes. The Dust Trials. I t will b remembered that this year's R.A.C. dust tria l , which were ·to ha1·e been held in July, 1Yere po tponed partly on account of unsettl ed weather. but mainly because the makers did not care about participating, although at their reque t it was arranged that tht trials should be absolutely prirnte and non-competiti,· . It ,ms decided by the Club that the trial should be held over till the autumn, and that p1i1·ate 01Yner~ should be a ked to compete. The R.A. C. has 11011· made an appeal to member and associates to lend their cars for the dust trial , and we hope a hearty re pon e to the request will be made. Jn the past the Du t Committee have endeavoured to obtain for purposes of comparative tests ca rs whi('h ra ise nn excessi,·e quantity of dust. p to the present year they have not been unsucces ful , but makers no longe .('are to enter cars, for reasons which ll'e stated when the trials ll'ere last under di scussion. On the other hand, the Club believes that Oll'ne rs of du ty cars will be glad to lend them, particul a rly as in a number of cases there is no doubt that if these dusty cars were examined and tried the members of the Dust Committee, with the knowledge they have acquire<l from . tudy of the previou dust trials, would be able to make suggestion. to the owners of these dusty cars which would enable them to effect an improvement.

lf sufficient entries are obtained the tri a ls should be most intere ting, as the Oll'ners of ca rs which ra ise ,·e ry little dust will be able to compete among themseh-es to ee ll'ho can rai e the smallest dust cloud, while those 11° ho have cars which are bad dust raise rs can ha1·e a friendly competition to see who can make the worst trail. It would be mo. t interesting, too, to have cars of the same make a.nd horse-power, but with different bodies, di ff erent ize tyres, or other 1·ariations. Should sufficient entrie be obtained, the trials 11·ill be held t011·ards the em] of the month at Brooklands, probably at a ll'eek-end , but if the weather be unkind the re ll'ill be nothing for it but to postpone them, though entrant-owners wi 11 be notified in good tim , so that they will be put to no inconvenience. In this case an attempt may lie made later lo hold the clu t trials under cover, but it is an open ques tion whether this can be done satisfactori ly. We hope a good number of owners will ente r for this very interesting e1·ent and mo. t useful tri a l. We know it is the road rather than the car which is to bl ame for du t tra ils, but some cars are so much 11·orse than othe rs at the same peed and over the same road that it is quite obvious that many Oll'ners and makers havt sti ll much to learn. These annual tri als, too, are :1 l ways made the opportunity for t esting any new invent ions for b ati11g down the dust.

\Ve particularly hope that motori ts will enter for these trials, a we think they should gi,·e a ll the assistance they can to the Club in its persistent investigation and experiment, as it is necessary to bear in mind that practically everyth ing known about the raising of dust by the passage of a motor car over a dusty highway bas been ascertained by the Club trials :rnd obsen·ations on Brooklands and e lsewhere. Comparatively trifling alterations to a number of cars on the road would tend to greatly reduce the trail of dust thev lea,·e behind them, and there is no doubt that the' entrants themselves, be ides pr01·iding the Club with further data . would also learn a great deal, and in many ea es they would no doubt ha1·e slight alterations made in their cars which would re ult in less cl u t in future and a spread of the knowledge as to what is nece a ry to enable cars to be rendered as dustless as possible. No doubt roads will be made almost clustle s within a few years from now, but in the meantim a 11 good motori ts wnnt to raise as little
