COMMENT

ALFA ROMEO IS FINALLY COMING GOOD AGAIN

THERE IS HOPE yet: Alfa Romeo claims to be contributing positively to owner Stellantis’s financial results after making more profit in the first six months of 2022 than in the whole of 2021. Why do we care? Firstly, it means Alfa’s much-hyped resurgence looks on track, which is great news for the historic Italian brand – and the industry. Secondly, it means brand boss Jean-Philippe Imparato, a car nut by all accounts (including our own), can start to bring Alfa back to its glory days. Two words: sports cars.

Imparato’s vision of the future includes not only the sensible volume models, such as the Tonale, that are so crucial to profits but also the brandbuilding halo sports cars, which we all love yet know have been harder to justify for car makers in recent years.

According to Imparato (see p8), we will see a sports car with hints of the T33 Stradale – regularly praised as one of the most beautiful cars of all time – by mid-2023. It might be electric, but it could also be a final hurrah for an Alfa combustionengined sports car, says Imparato.

After the slightly misjudged 4C of the last decade, Alfa Romeo appears in good stead to finally nail the modernday sports car before its fully fledged electric revolution from 2025. Rachel Burgess Magazine editor rachel.burgess@haymarket.com
